Barnes and Noble began as a simple printing shop for books by Charles Barnes in 1873 in Wheaton, Illinois. William Barnes his son in partnership with Clifford Nobles opened up the very first what is known as "Barnes & Noble's Bookstore" in New York City. The first bookstore was located at 31 West 15th St. and remained open all through World War I. Mr. Leonard Riggio bought out the bookstores in 1971 overseeing the growth of the stores until today. Today the stores are considered the largest bookstores in the United States.
You can go into their stores and buy books or tapes or you can order what you want online. Barnes & Noble's keeps all the up-dated- materials in their stores but you can also order older books. The stores are noted for having a coffee shop inside so that you can enjoy reading a book, or listening to a tape while having a cup of coffee, hot chocolate, or tea and perhaps a scone or muffin. The store is well known for providing the customers with many comforts to help them enjoy reading books. In different sections of the store you will find sofas or easy chairs for your reading comfort.
Working at Barnes and Noble
The employee's also like working for Barnes & Noble's because of the warm atmosphere in their working environment, the availability of all the different books and tapes as well as the lucrative benefit package. Employee's received a discount on their purchases and is permitted to stay and listen to the tapes if they prefer. This is a great place to work for college students, teachers, or professors. People who enjoy reading books usually like working at a Barnes & Noble as well.
Children like the store because of the area provided where they too can set and read books, the reading corner where their teacher can bring them and read to the class, or the ability to come in with their parents and find good reading materials. The store also has many different learning materials that can be used to help younger students while they are learning to read. Barnes & Noble's is a family store enjoyed by all.
When you compare a place like this to their competitors such as Borders, etc, when it comes to working here, they seem to be rather similar. If you love reading and love a quiet atmosphere, this may be a place to work!
